NEW CYCLING INITIATIVE LAUNCHED

Posted: 18th Jun 2008

A new initiative designed to clamp down on the number of people cycling on footpaths in the Mile Cross area has been launched following concerns being raised by local people.

The issue of cycling on footpaths was raised by concerned members of the public at the most recent meeting of the Mile Cross, Catton and Fiddlewood Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT).

The SNT has therefore made this issue one of its three key priorities of work for the summer.

Sgt Brian Sweeney from the team said: "We have set up an initiative whereby we will be making a positive effort to stop anyone that is seen riding dangerously on a footpath in the area.

"Officers will take down the details of those cyclists stopped and these will be recorded at the police station.

"Anyone aged 16 and above who is caught more than once may be issued with a penalty notice."
